Why choose brick pavers? Brick pavers can be a natural choice, it is a versatile material of great durability for many areas around the home, shopping centers, pathways, driveways, pool areas and outdoor living areas. Made of concrete, sand, and shale, pavers are fired up to produce enduring color and strength, making it one of the most practical and beautiful options for outdoor floors.

CONCRETE PAVERS

From patios and driveways to roads, ports and airports, interlocking concrete pavements provide a durable and beautiful pavement solution.

INSTALLATION

  • This pavement structure is commonly used for both pedestrian and vehicular applications.
  • Compaction of the soil subgrade and aggregate base materials are essential to the long-term performance of interlocking concrete pavements.
  • Installation steps typically include job planning, layout, excavating and compacting the soil subgrade, applying geotextiles (optional), spreading and compacting the sub-base and/or base aggregates, constructing edge, restraints, placing and screeding the bedding sand, placing concrete pavers, compacting concrete pavers, sweeping in jointing sand and final compaction.

BENEFITS

Appearance

Wide range of finishes, colors, shapes and sizes.  Laying patterns can compliment any home's architecture due to a wide variety of styles available.

Initial Cost & Installation

Moderate: Tightly fitted, uniform units are placed over a sand bed and a compacted aggregate base.  Immediately ready for use.  Can be installed by a homeowner or an ICPI Certified Installer.

Maintenance

Low: Stained or broken pavers can be easily replaced without patches.  Dark colored pavers can help hide stains.  Factory-made pavers last for decades.

MAINTANANCE

  • Pavers are near maintenance free. You may have to seal them occasionally with concrete paver sealer and perhaps reset pavers that have settled, but most for the most part they are a hands-free material.

Winter Durability

High: Small, high density units resist cracking as well as damage from freeze-thaw cycles and salts.  Pavers are stronger than ordinary or stamped concrete.

Snow Removal

Smooth surfaces allow for easy snow removal.  Darker pavers help snow melt faster.  Snow-melt systems can be easily integrated to eliminate snow and ice removal.

PERMEABLE PAVERS

Permeable interlocking concrete pavement (PICP) is a durable cost-effective solution for compliance to national, state/provincial and municipal stormwater regulations.

BENEFITS

This short video discusses current stormwater management practices and shows how PICP can be used as part of an effective sustainable, low impact development response to today's stormwater management problem.

PAVING SLABS

BENEFITS

INSTALLATION

  • There are numerous ways to install concrete slabs, bitumen set, pedestal set, mortar set, sand set on a concrete base.
  • Concrete paving slabs require two more hands to install, whereas pavers only require one hand.
  • Paving slabs and planks can withstand limited vehicular traffic. They will require cement stabilized or concrete bases in such applications with a sand or sand-bitumen bedding. Paving slabs may require grinding or gauging in many applications to ensure consistent height and plan dimensions for tightly fitted units. Bedding materials can be coarse sand (same as that used with pavers) or a sand-bitumen mix. Bedding materials should be compacted prior to placing the paving units to ensure an even surface.
  • Paving slabs provide a much more attractive and durable sidewalks and plaza surface than cast-in-place concrete or asphalt.
  •  Offered them in a range of colors, often with surface treatments such as polished, ground or blasted to create a stone-like appearance. Paving slabs communicate understated sophistication not achieved by conventional pavements.

MAINTANENCE

  • While the initial costs of more attractive and durable paving slabs will likely be higher than poured concrete or asphalt, maintenance and repair costs can be lower as paving slabs are removed and reinstated after underground repairs, i.e. no wasted discarding of the pavement surface. Because there are fewer joints, paving slabs present a visually calmer surface.

GRIDS

BENEFITS

INSTALLATION

  • Grids are intended for limited traffic
  • They are constructed on a compacted aggregate road base. An inch of bedding sand is used to seat the units during compacted with a plate compactor.
  •  Once in placed they are compacted, the openings filled with topsoil and grass seed. The surface is swept clean and compacted again. Several weeks should be allowed for the grass to grow.
  • Regular watering is required until the grass is established.

  • Concrete grid pavements or “green parking lots” originated from the need to reduce the urban heat island and stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces.
  • They are used to reduce lakeside erosion, ditch liners, driveways, overflow parking areas, shoulders along airfields, road crossovers on medians, boat launching ramps, emergency fire lanes, and for access roads adjacent to buildings.

MAINTANENCE

  • Concrete grids with grass require maintenance ordinarily required for lawns such as watering, mowing, removal of weeds and occasional fertilizing. If grass in grid pavements.
  • Snow can be plowed from grids if the plow blade is set slightly above their surface.
  • Rotary brushes for snow removal are not recommended.
  • De-icing salts should never be used on grass because salt will kill it.
